China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I've found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it's the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors—silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.
It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks(人行道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can't provide.
Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied(陪伴) my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.
My first ride home was orderly(守秩序的). To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn't want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully. Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.
1.According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today?
A.Because they are traditional and safe.
B.Because they are convenient and inexpensive.
C.Because they are colorful and available.
D.Because they are fast and environment friendly.
2.The author decided to buy a bicycle because he intended _______.
A.to ride it for fun
B.to use it for transport
C.to experience local culture
D.to improve his riding skills
3.How did the author feel about his street crossing?
A.It was boring.
B.It was difficult.
C.It was lively.
D.It was wonderful.
4.Which of the following best describes the author's biking experience?
A.The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills.
B.The author was annoyed by the air while riding.
C.The author was praised by the other bikers.
D.The author took great pleasure in biking.

It was Mother’s Day morning last year and I was doing my shopping at our local supermarket with my five-year-old son, Tenyson. As we were leaving, we found that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and had hit her head on the concrete. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed and clearly in shock.
Walking towards the scene, Tenyson became very upset about what had happened to the couple. He said to me, “Mum, it’s not much fun falling over in front of everyone.”
At the front of the supermarket, a charity(慈善) group had set up a stand selling cooked sausages and flowers to raise funds. Tenyson suggested that we should buy the lady a flower. “It will make her feel better,” he said. I was amazed that he’d come up with this sweet idea. So we went over to the flower seller and asked her if we could buy a flower for the lady to cheer her up. “Just take it,” she replied. “I can’t take your money for such a wonderful gesture.”
By now paramedics(急救人员) had arrived, and were attending the injured woman. As we walked up to her, my son became intimidated by all the blood and medical equipment. He said he was just too scared to go up to her.
Instead I gave the flower to the woman’s husband and told him, “My son was very upset for your wife and wanted to give her this flower to make her feel better.”
At that, the old man started crying and said, “Thank you so much, you have a wonderful son. Happy Mother’s Day to you.”
The man then bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. Though badly hurt and shaken, the old lady looked up at Tenyson with love in her eyes and gave him a little smile.
1.What dose the author intend to tell us?
A.One can never be too careful.
B.Actions speak louder than words.
C.Love begins with a little smile.
D.A small act of kindness brings a great joy.
2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The elderly woman was knocked down by Tenyson.
B.Tenyson’s idea of buying a flower gained his father’s support.
C.Tenyson’s care for the elderly woman puzzled the flower seller.
D.The elderly woman was moved to tears by Tenyson’s gesture.
3.The underlined word “intimidated” in the fourth paragraph probably means “___________”.
A.astonished
B.struck
C.frightened
D.excited
4.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Flower Power
B.Mother’s Day
C.An Accidental Injury
D.An Embarrassing Moment

To:Marilyn Sawyer
From:Paul Lebowski
Sent:Tuesday,October 3
Subject:Office rental
Marilyn,
Here's a link to an office rental ad I found online:www.offices.com/10-01. I think it's worth looking at even though the rent is a bit high. I know it is a good deal more than we are paying now, but look at the size. It's twice as big as our current office, and I'm sure we can use the space. And it has a kitchen, a bathroom and a reception area just like we have now. Unfortunately it is nowhere near a subway station. That is a convenience I would miss having, but it does have parking, unlike our current office. I'm sure our clients would appreciate that. It would also be good to be in a building with an elevator. I'm really tired of using the stairs. I'd like to see the space as soon as possible. Could you call and make an appointment? Try and get one for tomorrow if you can, because after that I'll be away until next Monday, as you know. Thanks.Paul
1.What does the advertised office have that the current office doesn't?
A.A kitchen.
B.A bathroom.
C.A parking area.
D.A reception area.
2.How much would Marilyn and Paul have to pay before moving into the advertised office?
A.$900.
B.$1,750.
C.$1,800.
D.$3,500.
3.When does Paul want to see the office?
A.Monday.
B.Tuesday.
C.Wednesday.
D.Thursday.

Stephen William Hawking(1942.1-2018.3), was a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge. Having spent his career decoding the universe and even experienced weightlessness, he was urging the continuation of space exploration — for humanity’s sake. The 76-year-old Hawking once said he did not think humans would survive another 1,000 years “without escaping beyond our fragile planet.”
The scientist made the remarks before an audience of doctors, nurses and employees at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he toured a stem cell laboratory that’s focused on trying to slow the progression of Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Hawking was diagnosed(被诊断) with the neurological disorder 55 years ago while studying at Cambridge University. He recalled how he became depressed and at first didn’t see a point in finishing his PhD. But he continued to devote himself to his studies.
“If you understand how the universe operates, you control it in a way,” he said. Famous for his work on black holes and the origins of the universe, Hawking was also well-known for bringing abstract physics concepts to the masses through his best-selling books.
Hawking survived longer than most people with Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. ALS attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord(脊髓) that control the muscles. People gradually have more and more trouble breathing and moving as muscles weaken and waste away. There’s no cure and no way to reverse (倒转) the disease’s progression. Few people with ALS live longer than a decade.
Hawking received around-the-clock care, could only communicate by twitching his cheek, and relied on a computer mounted to his wheelchair to convey his thoughts in a unique robotic monotone.
Despite his diagnosis, Hawking remained active. In 2007, he floated like an astronaut on an aircraft that created weightlessness by making parabolic(抛物线) dives. “However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do.” he said.
1.Why did Hawking remark that humans will not survive another 1,000 years?
A.To warn the earth may not be suitable to live on.
B.To make his theory on cosmology widely accepted.
C.To show the earth is becoming more and more fragile.
D.To persuade human beings to further space exploration.
2.What if a person suffers from Lou Gehrig’s disease?
A.They will be unable to walk or speak to others.
B.They are likely to die within ten years generally.
C.They can recover a little bit if they are treated early.
D.They are mostly assisted by especially-designed robots
3.What do Hawking’s achievements in science lie in?
A.His interest in physics.
B.His creation of black holes. .
C.His research on the universe.
D.His strong will against disease.
4.What must human beings do if they want to survive according to Hawking?
A.Study the universe without stop.
B.Escape possible future disasters.
C.Realize the way the universe works.
D.Protect the environment of the earth.

Eyesight plays a very important role in our daily life. Every waking moment, the eyes are working to see the world around us. Over forty percent of Americans worry about losing eyesight, but it's easy to include steps into our daily life to ensure healthy eyes. Here are five suggestions for a lifetime of healthy eyesight:

    ● ④ As part of a healthy diet, eat more fruits and vegetables each day. Vitamins (维生素) C and E help protect eyesight and promote eye health.
    ● Practice safe wear and care of contact lenses (隐形眼镜). Many Americans use contact lenses to improve their eyesight. While some follow the medical guidance for wearing contact lenses, many are breaking the rules and putting their eyesight at risk.⑤. Otherwise, you may have problems such as red eyes, pain in the eyes, or a more serious condition.

C. They can properly protect your eyes.
D. Stay in good shape by taking more vitamins.
E. Parents usually don’t care about their own eyesight.
