I remember the first time I got on a horse. When I was a little boy aged two, my mom agreed to let me take a short ride and that was it! From then on, I drove my parents crazy begging for a horse.
When I was four, I had mutism, in which children stop speaking in certain social situations. I went days, weeks, months without a sound at school. At most, I might quietly whisper to a friend. I suffered silently through school until I was ten when a psychologist (心理学家) had an idea. He asked me what I wanted more than anything else in the world. He explained I was going to be given a chance to work for that. And I was permitted to whisper the answer in my mother’s ear, “A horse.”
I was to get a pony, but I had to live up to my end of the bargain (讲价). I had a list of weekly tasks I had to finish. I had to answer the phone five times per week, something I had never done before. I had to say one word to my teacher at school and the list went on. For a child with mutism, saying one word to someone can be like climbing Mount Qomolangma. I did everything that was asked of me and the day came. His name was Sequoia, whom I fell in love with immediately. When I was in Sequoia’s presence, I forgot all about my problems and felt strong and secure.
I am a fully participating member of society these days. My horse and I made it through a master’s degree. I may have made it otherwise, but I’m not sure. I feel I owe my life to the horse and I try to give it back to him. He has given me the best gift I could ever imagine, my life.
1.What was the situation like when the author was four?
A.He didn’t say a word at all.
B.He learned how to ride a horse.
C.He found his classmates unfriendly.
D.He had difficulty in communicating.
2.What can we infer about the author from Paragraph 3?
A.He completed some tasks easily.
B.He pushed himself extremely hard.
C.He fell in love with Sequoia gradually.
D.He found the psychologist’s idea useless.
3.What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A.To share his unfortunate childhood.
B.To give tips on how to cure mutism.
C.To show his deep gratefulness to his horse.
D.To encourage kids struggling against mutism.

This may look like a mud-covered creature, but it’s actually a kid enjoying Mud Day, an annual summer tradition at Nankin Mills Park in Wayne County, Michigan. Each July, thousands of people play in a mud-filled hole measuring 21 by 46 meters.
www.xiangpi.com
“It’s been one of the country’s most successful events,” says Beth Hughes, an official of Wayne County. “The kids just love it.”
It might look like a lot of fun to dive into a huge pool of mud. But is this dirty activity safe? In general, mud is mostly harmless, says Steven Davis, a doctor in San Antonio, Texas. But mud can contain things like bacteria that can cause illness. If you’re planning on diving into the mud anytime soon, try to avoid getting it in your mouth, eyes, or nose, warns Davis. Also, wash off really well when you are finished. And if you have an open cut, the safest bet is to just stay out of the mud.
In some cases, covering your body with mud can actually be a good thing. Some mud, like that from the Dead Sea in the middle East, is rich in elements (元素) that could be beneficial for the skin, such as calcium, magnesium and zinc. It’s also why some spas offer mud baths as a beauty treatment.
“One of the reasons why people lie in the Dead Sea or cover themselves in mud is that the minerals (矿物质) in it may reduce swelling.” says Davis. Mud may also act as a seal on the skin to trap in moisture (水分). Besides, the warmth of a mud bath just makes people feel good.
1.Mud Day is a tradition which ______.
A.is celebrated twice a year
B.is celebrated in June
C.is very popular with children
D.is the most successful event in Michigan
2.What advice does Steven Davis give in the text?
A.Use a cloth to cover your mouth and nose while in the mud.
B.Wash yourself simply as soon as you come out of the mud.
C.Wash yourself really well before diving into the mud.
D.Stay away from the mud if you have an open cut.
3.The underlined phrase“trap”in the last paragraph means “______”.
A.hold in
B.prevent
C.get rid of
D.catch
4.The last two paragraphs are mainly about ______.
A.the mineral that mud contains
B.the benefits of mud
C.the history of Mud Day
D.the medical use of mud

Many people say William Shakespeare’s writing is old, boring and difficult to read. However, that is simply not true. Even though Shakespeare wrote during the 1500s and 1600s, his themes are still important today, and his writing is actually easy to understand if you take the time to break it down.
Shakespeare wrote many plays and poems that had excitement, suspense, comedy, romance, and human drama. For example, Shakespeare wrote about teenagers hanging out with their friends, fairies playing tricks on humans, ghosts haunting castles, breathtaking sword fights, and lovers dying in each other’s arms. Shakespeare’s writing also shows that people faced the same challenges and emotions (情感) in the Renaissance (文艺复兴) as they do today. For example, he wrote about a young man who had to prove to his father that he was responsible.
Shakespeare’s language is not too difficult to figure out if you have patience and focus on the words as metaphors (隐喻). For example, think about these words: “Let every eye see for itself.” You know what all of those words mean separately, but you may not understand what they mean together. That is because he sometimes used words in an indirect way. Basically, Shakespeare is saying “Let each person decide for himself or herself.” He is saying that everyone should be able to make his or her own choices or judgments. This message is as important today as it was when it was written long ago. Whether you like comedy or tragedy, action or romance, you may find that you can relate to Shakespeare’s stories more than you think.
1.The author provides evidence (依据) to show that William Shakespeare wrote ______.
A.about the dangers in the 1500s and 1600s
B.about themes that are of great value today
C.essays with very old vocabularies
D.essays with political messages
2.Which evidence best supports the idea that Shakespeare wrote about emotions?
A.He wrote about a father-and-son relationship.
B.He described ghosts haunting castles.
C.He wrote about fairies playing jokes.
D.He described lovers having sword fights.
3.To support the idea that Shakespeare’s writing is understandable, the author ______.
A.told several stories
B.shared his own experiences
C.listed the types of Shakespeare’s plays
D.gave an example of Shakespeare’s words.
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Shakespeare Is Not Popular Today
B.Shakespeare’s Writing Is Out of Fashion
C.Shakespeare Is Always in Style
D.Shakespeare’s Contribution in Renaissance.

Something Fun
A person is on trial for murder in a court room in Oklahoma. There is strong evidence indicating that he is guilty. However, the body is not found.
In the defense’s (辩护方) closing speech, the lawyer, knowing that his client (委托人) is guilty and that it looks like he’ll probably be seriously punished, decided to play a clever trick.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the jury (陪审团), I have a surprise for you all,” the lawyer says as he looks at his watch. “Within one minute, the person assumed dead in this case will walk into this court room,” he says and he looks towards the court-room door. The jury, somewhat surprised, looks at the door eagerly. A minute passes. Nothing happens.
Finally the lawyer says, “Actually, I made up the previous statement. But you all waited with expectation. I, therefore, put it to you that there is a reasonable doubt in this case as to whether anyone was killed and insist that you pass a judgment of not guilty.”
The jury, clearly confused, back off to discuss.
A very few minutes later, the jury returned and one of them pronounces a verdict (裁决) of guilty.
“But how?” asks the lawyer in surprise. “You must have had some doubt; I saw all of you stare at the door.”
Answers the jury member, “Oh, we did look. But your client didn’t.”
1.Why was the person on trial according to the passage?
A.Because he couldn’t pay off the debts.
B.Because he probably killed somebody.
C.Because he didn’t pay the tax in time.
D.Because he planned to cheat the jury.
2.Why did the lawyer come up with the trick?
A.To find the body.
B.To frighten the jury.
C.To help his client.
D.To save himself.
3.Why did the jury look at the door eagerly?
A.The lawyer’s words must be true.
B.They expected his family to come in.
C.They were surprised and cheated by the lawyer.
D.They thought the person on trial was escaping.
4.What did the jury member’s answer mean in the last paragraph?
A.They firmly believed that nobody was killed.
B.The behaviour of the client gave him away.
C.The jury still needed more evidence to prove it.
D.The lawyer’s words were worth thinking about.

Five Ideas for a Better Sleep
Most teens need about 8.5 to more than 9 hours of sleep each night. But about 1 in 4 teens has trouble sleeping. ①It can affect sports performance, increase our chances of getting sick, and may be linked to weight gain in some people. How can we get the sleep we need? Here are some ideas.
②You’ve probably noticed how much running around little kids do – and how well they sleep. Get at least 60 minutes of exercise a day. Physical activity can decrease stress and help people feel more relaxed. Just don’t work out too close to bedtime because exercise can wake you up before it slows you down.
Avoid alcohol and drugs. Lots of people think that alcohol or drugs will make them relaxed, but that’s not the case. Drugs and alcohol increase a person’ chance of waking up in the middle of the night.
③Experts recommend using the bedroom for sleep only. If you can’t make your bedroom a tech-free zone, at least shut everything down an hour or more before lights go out.
Keep a sleep routine. ④Relax every night by reading, listening to music, spending time with a pet, or writing in a journal.
Expect a good night’s sleep. Stress can cause insomnia (失眠), so the more you suffer from not sleeping, the greater the risk you’ll lie awake staring at the ceiling. ⑤Say, “Tonight, I will sleep well” several times during the day.
A.Take some exercise before bed.
B.Be active during the day.
C.Say goodnight to electronic equipment.
D.Everyone has a sleepless night once in a while.
E.Instead of worrying that you won’t sleep, remind yourself that you can.
F.Going to bed at the same time every night helps the body expect sleep.
G.Lack of sleep can affect everything from our emotions to how well we focus on tasks like driving.

I prefer my English classes to be taught in English only. What we all know, a good learning environment is of greatly importance if we want to study English well. Classes teaching in English provide students for a better environment. When English is an only language in class, students will have more opportunity to practice listening and speaking. However, there were problems with this method. Sometimes we may find difficult to follow the teacher and some slow learners may even give up learn English. In spite of these difficulties, but I believe practice makes perfect. With enough practice, we can overcome the difficulties and benefit from English classes in the long run.
