A law was passed last month in San Francisco, California to protect shelter pets. The city now requires pet stores to sell dogs and cats from shelters and rescue groups only and bans the sale of non-rescue dogs and cats, and puppies under 8 weeks old, by pet stores in the city.
San Francisco will not be the first US city to take such a measure. Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston and Austin all passed similar laws to help more rescued pets find homes.
“Most animal lovers are not willing to keep their family pet in a dirty cage for a second — let alone a week, month or even years,’’ the San Francisco Board of Supervisors wrote. “In response, more than 200 cities and counties across the nation have banned the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores.”
Each year, shelters across the US take in more than 7 million dogs and cats, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). About 2.6 million of those animals don’t get adopted and are put to sleep. “There are so many shelter animals that need loving homes,’’ says the lawmaker Katy Tang.
Meanwhile, most dogs and cats seen in pet shop windows come from breeders who sell them to the stores. Many breeders take good care of their animals. But some breeders raise hundreds of animals at a time in dirty spaces. The animals often go without enough food or water, or proper medical treatment.
Tang says San Francisco’s new law is meant to send a message to any breeder who treats animals cruelly.
1.What do we know about the new law?
A.It was passed last month in Los Angeles.
B.Puppies under 8 weeks old can be sold by pet stores.
C.It aimed to protect pets from shelters and rescue groups.
D.Pet stores can only sell non-rescue dogs and cats.
2.Which of the following cities was not mentioned to pass the law to help rescued pets?
A.Chicago.
B.Austin.
C.San Francisco.
D.Las Vegas.
3.What does the underlined word “breeders” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Sellers.
B.Keepers.
C.Protectors.
D.Hunters.
4.What can we infer about dogs and cats in pet stores?
A.Some of them lived in a poor condition before being sold to the pet stores.
B.Most of them are from breeders who sell them to the pet stores.
C.The sale of them is banned in most cities and counties across the nation.
D.Most of them are adopted and put to sleep.

First published in 2001, the book Life of Pi written by Canadian author Yann Martel won the Man Booker Prize and an Asian American Prize for Literature. It is the story of a young boy named Pi who spends 227 days at sea with a small group of animals after disaster strikes their ship and is an account of his journey of survival and hardship.
Piscine “Pi” Molitor Patel, on whom Life of Pi is based, is a young boy living in Pondicherry,India, where his father owns a zoo. The story starts when Patel’s family decide to move toCanada, along with their zoo animals for their new home.
However, because of the bad weather, the ship sinks. Pi along with an orangutan (猩猩), an injured zebra, a hyena (鬣狗) and a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker are the only survivors who take shelter in a small lifeboat. Both the injured zebra and the orangutan are soon killed and eaten by the hyena. The tiger in turn kills and eats the hyena, leaving just the two of them alone on the boat now.
In an effort to avoid being eaten by Richard Parker, Pi acts himself as the head of the group and remains safe from harm. Since he does not want the tiger to die for fear of going mad by being alone on the boat, he fishes and feeds the two of them in order to stay alive.
The life of Pi then enters its third stage when their lifeboat washes up on the shores ofMexicoand the tiger escapes into a nearby forest leaving Pi alone. After the Mexicans refuse to believe Pi’s story, he changes his tale by replacing the animals with his mother, a cook and a sailor and asks the Mexicans which one they prefer. They prefer hearing the first story though they do not believe a word of it.
In my view, Life of Pi is a must read book for all those who love reading.

On Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicted that 42% of Americans could be overweight by 2030. Our expanding waistlines lead to not only a medical problem, but according to a recent article In The New York Times, it could also endanger personal safety in some situations—in an airplane crash, for example.
The New York Times' Christen Negroni reports that engineers and scientists are questioning whether airplane seats are adequately constructed to protect overweight travelers. Government standards for airplane seat strength(强度)— first set moe than 60 years ago — require that the seats be made for a passenger weighing 170 pounds (77kg). Today, the average American man weighs nearly 194 pounds (88kg) and the average woman 165 pounds (75kg). Negroni reports:
“If a heavier person completely fills seat, the seat is not likely to behave as intended during a crash,” said Robert Salazar, the leading scientist at the Center for Applied Biomechanics at the University of Virginia. “The energy absorption that is built into the aircraft seat is likely to be overpowered and the passengers will not be protected properly.”
“Nor would the injury be limited to that passenger only,” Dr. Salzar said. “If a seat or a seat belt fails,” he said, “those people who are seated nearby could be endangered from 'the uncontrolled movements of the passenger'.”
Most complaints about airplane seats focus on their lack of comfort and high ticket price, and whether overweight passengers should be made to buy two seats. But The New York Times' article brings up another reason to feel anxious about flying. Investigators of the issue got in touch with the airplane seat and seat belt makers, but they refused to comment on the problem. Experts agreed that crash testing should be done with overweight dummies (人体模型). Both airplane seats and seat belts should be tested, they said.
Fortunately, however, according to Nora Marshall, a senior adviser at the National Transportation Safety Board, the board's investigators have never seen an accident involving a commercial plane in which the weight of a passenger was a problem.
1.What is the article in The New York Times mainly concerned with?
A.The size of airplane seats and seat belts.
B.Airplane crashes involving commercial planes.
C.Safety of overweight airplane passengers.
D.A medical problem caused by being overweight.
2.Robert Salzar would probably agree that _______.
A.overweight passengers should buy two seats
B.standards for airplane seat strength should be raised
C.the government should help produce safer planes
D.passengers should know how to protect themselves
3.We can learn from the text that ______.
A.airplane seat makers have taken action now
B.there are few complaints about airplane seats
C.only a small number of airplane accidents involve the overweight
D.those seats near the overweight may suffer too
4.What is the best title for the text?
A.Why Do Passengers Feel Anxious about Flying?
B.Are Airplane Seats Safe Enough for the Overweight?
C.When Will the Overweight Enjoy Their Flight?
D.Will 42% of Americans Be OVERWEIGHT BY 2030?
